History
The ruins of ancient Paleros are preserved at the western end of Acarnania, opposite Lefkas, on the rocky hill called "Kechropoula" (altitude 272 m.), very close to the homonymous village (former Zaverda) and at a distance of about 15 km SW of Vonitsa.
Its fortified enclosure, with a total length of about 2 km, is one of the most amazing examples of Akarnanian fortification art and is still standing in all its glory. All scholars today agree on the identification of the city, based on the reports of Strabo, with the ancient Paleros; it has also been documented with epigraphic testimonies. The location dominates the surrounding plain, with the large lake of Voulkaria to its NW (the ancient Myrtountion according to Strabo), which indicates its importance as a strategic point in antiquity, as it was located near the famous Corinthian colonies of Lefkas, Sollio and the Palace.
